How this site is built

Trades Shortlist lists 115 agencies and coaching groups and 83 tools for home service contractors. This page is the whole method: where a listing comes from, how a list is ordered, when a page exists, and what the publisher owns. Last updated 17 Oct 2026.

Why it exists

Every "best HVAC marketing agency" page on the first page of Google is written by an agency that ranks itself first. Every software comparison is written by a vendor or paid for by one. A contractor choosing between an agency retainer and a piece of software has no page that puts the two side by side. This site is that page, for 11 trades and 7 needs.

Where listings come from

The seed list was built by reading the independent and vendor lists that already exist (agency listicles, software marketplaces, funding announcements, UK and Australian trade press), deduplicating by domain, and recording for each company only what a public source states: head office, trades named, services or category, integrations the vendor itself publishes, and a starting price when one is on the vendor's own site. The source read for each record is linked on its profile. Nothing is copied from reviews.

Where sources conflict (a founding year, a head office), the conflict is noted on the profile rather than resolved by guesswork. Where a domain could not be verified, the note says so.

Each agency profile carries a proof panel: the Clutch rating and review count, the Google rating and review count, and up to six clients the agency names on its own site. Every number is quoted as the platform showed it on the day it was read, with a link to where it was read and that date; a number without a link and a date is not shown. Review text is never copied and no rating is turned into review markup. Proof does not change a listing's position; the order rule above is the only sort.

How a list is ordered

There is no score. Every list on the site is sorted by one rule, in this order:

  1. Editor's picks first.
  2. Listings that name the page's trade explicitly, before listings that serve all trades.
  3. Listings with a published starting price or budget floor, before listings that quote.
  4. Name, A to Z.

The rule is the same on every page and is applied by the build, never by hand. A publisher product gets no adjustment in either direction.

Editor's picks

The 10 agency picks are the agencies that appeared most often across the lists read while building the seed data: Blue Corona, Contractor Dynamics, Hook Agency, KickCharge Creative, Lemon Seed Marketing, Rival Digital, RYNO Strategic Solutions, Scorpion, Thrive Internet Marketing Agency, WebFX. The 10 tool picks are chosen the same way: Angi, Avoca, CallRail, Housecall Pro, Jobber, Podium, Roofr, ServiceTitan, Thumbtack, Wisetack. Appearing on many lists is a measure of visibility; it says nothing about quality of work, and several of the agencies picked publish the very listicles they appear on. A publisher product is never a pick.

When a page exists

A list page exists only when three or more listings fit it (agencies plus tools on a trade and need page). Below three, the page is neither built nor linked. When a narrower page would list exactly the same listings in the same order as a broader page above it, only the broader page is built and the narrower address redirects to it. Today that is 726 pages built and 64 addresses redirected. A state page for a trade exists only when three or more agencies have their head office in that state.

The three-question shortlist

Trade, need and company size, with the country as a fourth, optional question. Each listing that serves the trade, does work that answers the need and operates in the country is scored: 3 points for naming the trade (2 for serving all trades), 3 for the need, 2 for the company size (an agency that does not publish a client size gets 1; a tool gets 2, since software serves every size), 1 for the country, 1 for an editor's pick, and a random fraction between 0 and 1 that changes once an hour. The three highest scores are shown, with at least one agency and one tool when both qualify. A publisher product gets nothing extra.

Badges

Badges are derived from the record and the built lists on every build and are never awarded by hand: Top {Trade} Marketing Agency 2026 for the ten agencies at the top of a trade page (and the top three on a trade and region page), {Trade} Specialist for an agency that names one trade only, Coaching Group, Works With {FSM} for a tool with a published integration, Built For {Trade} for a tool that serves one trade only, and Editor's Pick. A listing that stops qualifying loses the badge on the next build. The badges page lists every holder. A publisher product carries no badge.

What the publisher owns

FieldClients is owned by the publisher of Trades Shortlist. It is listed in the tools collection under the lead marketplace category because that is what it is, and it follows every rule above with no exception: it is labelled "Publisher's product" on every page where it appears, it is never an editor's pick, it carries no badge, it is ordered by the same rule as every other listing, and the shortlist gives it no bonus. Any list on the site where it appears also carries a one-paragraph note saying so. This disclosure is repeated in the site footer.

Vocabulary

US pages say "contractor" and "home services". UK and Australian pages say "trades". Operations platforms (what vendors call field service management software) are listed for completeness and are not compared head to head; Capterra and G2 do that already.

Corrections

Every record is written from sources anyone can check, and the source is linked on the profile. An agency or vendor whose situation has changed updates it at the source (its own site, its marketplace listing, its press page) and sends the links. The listing follows the record.
